You don't need a security team to make a real difference. These five checks take an afternoon.
1. Remove accounts for people who've left
Check email, practice-management software and remote access tools. Former staff and contractors are a common way in.
2. Confirm multi-factor authentication is on for everyone
Especially for email. Most clinic breaches start with a stolen mailbox password.
3. Restore one file from backup
A backup you've never restored from is a guess. Pick a patient file and make sure you can get it back.
4. Look at who can see shared folders
Links shared with "anyone" in OneDrive or Google Drive stay open until someone closes them.
5. Write down who to call
If ransomware locks your screens tomorrow, who does the front desk phone first? Put the answer on paper.
