Building a security program: a cycle, not a project

Many businesses treat security as a one-time purchase: buy antivirus, set up a firewall, done. But threats, staff and systems change every month. A security program is the repeating cycle that keeps protection current.

A security program is a cycle, not a project

The five stages

  1. Govern. Decide what you're protecting and how much risk is acceptable. Write it down in a short policy.
  2. Know your assets. List your systems, data and vendors, and mark what matters most, such as client files and payment systems.
  3. Assess risk. For each important asset, ask what could go wrong, how likely it is and how bad it would be. Compare against a framework like NIST CSF to find gaps.
  4. Protect and operate. Put controls in place, train staff and review vendors, starting with the biggest risks.
  5. Respond and improve. Handle incidents, learn from them and from audits, then feed those lessons back into the next cycle.

Running this cycle once or twice a year is what auditors, insurers and large clients increasingly expect to see. Our vCISO service runs it for you, and our compliance service turns it into audit evidence.
